“Do you play with dolls?” Dani asked in surprise as they had left the shop.

“I told you, it’s not for a doll.”

“Who’s it for then?”

“I’ll tell you when we get to Venice.”

But Dani didn’t accept that. “I want to know now!”

Sadie took a big breath: “Your little sister. You’re going to be a big sister.”

Dani stared at her through the holes in the mask.

“Does Dad know about this?” she asked finally.

“No, he doesn’t know a thing. Promise not to tell him! I want to do it myself.”

Dani closed her eyes. It was as if a small sun had lit up inside her.
